Plot Summary

The film begins with a flashback of Jake (Trey Songz) and Chris (Jack Kesy) as teenagers, robbing a convenience store with their friends Dwayne (Tanee McCall) and Rico (Fetty Wap). Jake takes the blame for the robbery and is arrested by Detective Munce (Chelle Ramos), while Chris escapes. Jake is sentenced to 15 years in prison, while Chris joins the police academy and becomes a cop.

In the present day, Jake is released from prison and reunites with his sister Angela (China Anne McClain), who works as a nurse. Jake also meets Angela's boyfriend Lorenzo (Hassan Johnson), who is a drug dealer and a rival of Rico, who has become a powerful crime lord. Jake learns that Chris is now a detective and is married to Dwayne, who is pregnant with his child. Jake feels betrayed by his former friends and decides to get revenge on them.

Jake contacts Rico and offers to work for him as a hitman. Rico agrees and assigns Jake to kill Lorenzo, who has been stealing from him. Jake agrees, but secretly plans to double-cross Rico and kill him instead. Jake also tries to reconnect with Chris, who is unaware of his intentions. Chris is happy to see Jake again, but is also suspicious of his motives.

Jake manages to kill Lorenzo and injure Angela in the process. He then confronts Rico at his nightclub and shoots him dead. He also kills Rico's henchmen, including Munce, who was working for Rico as a corrupt cop. Jake then calls Chris and tells him to meet him at the convenience store where they robbed 15 years ago.

Chris arrives at the store and finds Jake waiting for him with a gun. Jake accuses Chris of betraying him and leaving him to rot in prison. Chris tries to explain that he did not know that Jake took the blame for the robbery, and that he became a cop to make amends for his past mistakes. He also tells Jake that he still considers him as his brother and begs him to stop his vendetta.

Jake refuses to listen and shoots Chris in the chest. He then realizes that he has made a mistake and tries to help Chris, but it is too late. Chris dies in Jake's arms, telling him that he loves him. Jake breaks down in tears and apologizes to Chris. He then hears sirens approaching and realizes that he has no way out. He picks up Chris's gun and points it at his own head.

Critical Reception

Blood Brothers received mostly negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 13% based on 15 reviews, with an average rating of 3/10. The site's critical consensus reads: "Blood Brothers wastes its intriguing premise on a dull and derivative crime thriller that fails to live up to its graphic novel source material." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 28 out of 100 based on 7 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".

Critics criticized the film for its lack of originality, its poor script, its weak direction, and its mediocre acting. Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film one star out of four and wrote: "Blood Brothers is a generic, clichéd, predictable, violent mess of a movie that borrows heavily from better films such as Boyz n the Hood, Training Day, and The Departed, but fails to capture any of their depth, nuance, or style." Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter called the film "a low-rent rip-off of superior crime dramas" and added: "The film's only saving grace is its brief running time, which mercifully spares us from having to endure more of its ineptitude."

Some critics praised the film for its action scenes and its soundtrack, which features songs by Trey Songz, Fetty Wap, and other hip-hop artists. Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times gave the film a mixed review and wrote: "Blood Brothers is a serviceable B-movie thriller with some solid action sequences and a few surprising twists. It's not a great film, but it's not a terrible one either. It's just a forgettable one." Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review and wrote: "Blood Brothers delivers a satisfying dose of adrenaline-fueled entertainment that doesn't take itself too seriously. The film benefits from its energetic cast, its stylish direction, and its catchy soundtrack."
